Once upon a time there was a king in a kingdom. His daughter wanted to get married. But he was not liking any of them. One day the king told him to find a groom for himself. The princess went out to search for food along with some of her friends and reached the nearby jungle. There he saw a very handsome boy. The princess fell in love with that boy. The girl told him about her heart and asked him to marry her. At first the boy felt very strange, then he said that my parents are different and I have to look after them and serve them. And you are a princess. You will not be able to stay in this jungle. The girl said, I will stay here and will also serve your parents along with you.
The name of that prince was Satyavan and he was also a prince. But he had lost his kingdom. That is why he started living in the jungle with his parents. After some time of living in the jungle, Satyavan’s parents lost their eyesight. Satyavan knew that his income was less. That’s why he was not saying yes to marriage. But after his parents explained it to him, he said yes. I also thought that if he dies, at least there will be someone to serve his parents after him.
Satyavan and Savitri got married. Savitri used to follow Satyavan the whole day. She never leaves him alone. It is a matter of one day that Yumraj will come to earth to take Satyavan’s life. When he took Satyavan’s life away, he became unconscious. Savitri was frightened after seeing Satyavan lying on the ground. Then his eyes fell on Yumraj. She started following them. Yumraj kept explaining to him that there was no benefit to him in following him because Satyavan’s age was very short.
But still Savitri did not listen to a single word and she kept following them. When Yumraj reached heaven, he said, ask for any blessing, I will give it to you. So Savitri demanded the birth of a child and Yumraj told the truth and left from there. When he reached the gate of Yumlok he saw that Savitri was still following him so he said that I have given you blessing, now why are you following me. So she said, you have blessed me with a child and how will I have children without a husband. After this Sunkar Yumraj gave the life of Satyavan to Savitri. Savitri took Satyavan’s life and reached the place where Satyavan’s body was lying. He put his life into his body. The tree under which Satyavan’s body was placed was the Vat tree. Since then married women started observing Vat Savitri fast for their husbands to get long life.
